Where Do You Make Your ERAS Fellowship Application?

ERAS or the Electronic Residency Application Service is the portal through which applicants are able to apply to the different residencies and fellowship programs that are available throughout the US. ERAS is part of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is linked to over 145 medical schools and some 400 teaching hospitals around the country.

ERAS provides a centralized place for students to lodge their applications and for the different programs to get the application data making life simpler for all involved. In addition to their service, you can also apply through the NRMP (National Residency Matching Program) or the Match which uses the data that you upload to ERAS and a preference list to fairly match applicants with the different fellowship programs.

Checklist for My ERAS Application

All data that you provide for your applications is entered or requested through your MyERAS account in AAMC. You can start to do this during May after you get your “token” from your dean’s office and set up your account. There is a large amount of information to input so it is best to start as early as possible:

  • Your application form: this online form contains all of the information that you would normally put within your resume.
  • Personal Statement(s). You are able to draft multiple statements if you are applying to multiple specialties or want to target each application with a separate statement.
  • Medical School transcripts
  • MSPE or Medical Student Performance Evaluation
  • Letters of Recommendation (LoR); you need to create a list of authors and then forward the request letter that is generated.
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination transcripts (USMLE).
  • For overseas applicants your ECFMG report (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates).
  • For applicants to California based programs your PTAL (Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter).

Your ERAS Application Process

The following steps are what you need to follow to upload all of the information required for your applications and to then make those applications:

  • Get an ERAS Token from your DDO (Designated Dean’s Office) or the ERAS Fellowship Documents Office (EFDO).
  • Register your token through the AAMC website to set up your MyERAS login information.
  • Complete the MyERAS registration document with all of the requested information.
  • Input the details of the LoR Authors that you wish to contact; you are not limited as to the number of requests and the system will generate a personalized letter for each.
  • Send the request letter to each LoR author along with any additional information.
  • Create your personal statement; you are able to create multiple targeted versions should you wish to.
  • Authorize the release of your USMLE report.
  • Work with your Designated Dean’s Office to upload all of your supporting documentation
  • Upload a photograph

Once you are happy with what you have uploaded you can confirm that your data is complete and you will then be able to start applying to programs through the MyERAS system. Until you have certified and submitted your data you will not be able to make any applications:

  • Search through MyERAS to find the cardiology fellowship personal statement requirements that are of interest to you.
  • Confirm all deadlines and requirements for each program.
  • Assign the specific documents that you wish to use for each application.
  • Make your applications.

Make Your Fellowship Application a Success

The most successful applications are those that clearly show that you are a perfect match for the program that you are applying to. While that may sound common sense many applicants fail to correctly tailor their applications to each program that they really want to be accepted for. It is important that you tailor things such as your residency cardiology personal statement to carefully match exactly what they are looking for. You should also consider which specific LoRs you should attach as some will hold more weight than others depending on the application being made.
